| they have an encounter with one. Here in MA, they use police to direct traffic in construction zones. Whenever I encounter this situation, I try to make eye contact with the cop and give a wave. Nine times out of ten, they wave back - I don't rev my motor or have music blasting, so I'm not giving them any reason to prejudge me. In the event that I should cross paths with them sometime later (not in a construction zone situation), I'm hopeful that they might remember me. On one occasion last year (after ZCON of all things), I was pulled over for speeding. This was at night and in Newport Beach. I signalled and pulled to the curb. Shut off the motor, turned on the interior lights, dropped my windows, and kept my hands in plain view on the steering wheel. When asked for ID and registration, I asked if it was OK for me to reach into the center arm rest to retrieve my wallet and then the glovebox to get the registration. After checking things over, I was let go without a written ticket. Why? 1) I didn't pull any attitude with him. 2) I let him see that I wasn't going to pose a threat to him by letting him know where I had to get my wallet and reg. 3) I was courteous to him and I believe he responded likewise because of this. I wasn't in my Z BTW but I don't think it would have made any difference. I'm not sure what experiences you've had with the local SD police force, but from your statements it sounds like you've had some less than positive encounters. If this is true, my question to you is: Did you give him any reason not to treat you in a polite manner? Another question: would you treat a local police officer with any less respect than an MP? Even cops can have bad days or some may feel the need to be intimidating. But for the brief time (5 ~ 10 minutes) that someone is having to deal with them, it would make sense to just deal with their attitude and then move on. Pushing back with retorts will just make the situation worse. Dave
